Being involved in politics can expose us to difficult conversations, disagreements--even what we might perceive as attacks. One NK Town Dems Committee member recalled a method she learned in her professional life, the CLARA technique:
CENTER yourself before the encounter begins.
LISTEN to the other person deeply and kindly.
AFFIRM their dignity by showing them your understanding; reflect back what you heard.
RESPOND with positive ideas that help reframe the situation.
ADD constructive suggestions, sources for more info, possibly a non-judgmental behavioral request.
Most of the time we start at step 4, RESPONDing with a counter-argument (possibly a counter-attack). How could we improve the conversation and the outcome by going through all the steps?
BRAVER ANGELS is another organization that offers training in conflict resolution, especially in politics.
