The April 15 Zoom School Budget Hearing felt a lot like the NK School Budget Hearings I experienced in person 9 years ago, 12 years ago, 15 years ago--basically every budget hearing I’ve ever been to. After coming with me a few times, one of my kids defined these hearings as “mostly women and a few men and teenagers standing up to say how important schools are and why we need to give them enough money. Then other people say the opposite. Why are those other people all angry, older, white men?”
Nowadays I ask a different question. How can we become the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Beloved Community, “a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth … [and] Love and trust will triumph”*?
