Your town needs you! First 2022 edition



Volunteer commissions and committees do a huge amount of the important business in our town. Come help out -- meet more of your neighbors and help make our great town even better!


Here are the boards and commissions that need people. If you're interested, submit an application. If you need more information first, contact the Town Clerk, or info@nkdemocrats.org and we'll try to help out.


ARTS COUNCIL: to promote and encourage programs for the development of public awareness and interest in various art forms; such as fine and performing arts, the appreciation of the colonial past, and the heritage of various ethnic groups. This Council meets the second Wednesday of each month. The appointment is for seven (7) members to March 1, 2024.


CONSERVATION COMMISSION: to promote and develop the natural resources; to preserve natural aesthetic areas within the Town; and to protect and conserve the environmental quality of the Town. This Commission meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The appointment is for one (1) member to October 1, 2023 to fill an unexpired term.


ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY BOARD: this board serves in an advisory capacity to the Town Council. Its duties shall be to advise the Council on the following matters:

(1) Monitor and advise the Council on progress of economic development in North Kingstown;

(2) Advise the Council on issues of economic development policy and implementation, at the Council's request or the Board's own initiative;

(3) Collaborate with the Town management on matters of economic development;

(4) Engage the business community and the public at large in the town's economic development policies and initiatives and in the implementation of community-wide economic development efforts; and

(5) Advise the Council on other matters that the Council may, from time to time, refer to the Board.

The appointment is for one (1) Second Alternate Member to December 1, 2023.


HARBOR MANAGEMENT COMMISSION: to recommend to the Town Council the adoption of rules, regulations, fees, penalties and other amendments to the Harbor Management Plan and its subsequent ordinances which may be necessary to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Harbor Management Plan; to recommend additional duties for the Harbor Division; to review and revise as necessary the Harbor Management Plan. The appointment is for one (1) member as a Marina/Boat Yard Operator Representative, one (1) member as a Recreational Boating Representative, one (1) member as an Environmental/Conservation Group Representative, and one (1) member as a Commercial Fishing Representative to March 1, 2024.


INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY COMMITTEE:  the purpose of this committee shall be to assist in establishing standards and guidelines and implementation of Information Technology initiatives, trends, IT related projects, services and methods of communication with the public.  The ITAC will advise the Town Council on these initiatives and submit quarterly progress reports to the Town Council. Members of the committee shall possess a working knowledge in an Information Technology field.  The Committee is comprised of: Three (3) Subject Matter Expert Members and one (1) Alternate Expert Member who have expertise in a particular area or topic of Information Technology. This would be a person with special knowledge or skills in a particular technology domain; AND Two (2) At-Large Members and one (1) Alternate At-Large Member who use Information Technology for their professional or personal use.


The appointment is for one (1) At-Large Member to March 1, 2023, one (1) Alternate At-Large

Member to March 1, 2023 to fill an unexpired term, and one (1) Alternate Expert Member to

March 1, 2024 to fill an unexpired term.


PERSONNEL BOARD: to hear appeals from the disciplinary action ordered by the appointing

authority. The Board meets at the call of the chair. The appointment is for one (1) member to

March 1, 2025.


TREE WARDEN: to have the care and control of all trees and shrubs within the limits of any public road or grounds and within the limits of the Town except those roads under the control of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation and those in public parks and grounds under the control of the Department of Environmental Management. The person appointed must be or within six (6) months of assuming office, become an arborist, licensed under Chapter 19 of the

Rhode Island General Laws. The appointment is for one (1) year to March 1, 2023.


VETERANS DAY & MEMORIAL DAY PARADES COMMITTEE: to promote, direct and supervise the annual North Kingstown Parades. The Committee meets at the call of the chair. The appointment is for three (3) members to March 1, 2025.


WICKFORD ADVISORY COMMITTEE:  The committee is charged with advising the council on preparing, managing growth and chance in Wickford while protecting the quality of life and historic character of the village.  To assist in the enhancement of the relationship between the village and harbor. Identify physical and other needs of Wickford.  The Committee shall consist of ten (10) regular members who shall serve staggered 3-year terms.  The appointments are preferably for four (4) Wickford Village Residents, four (4) Wickford Village Business Owners, and two (2) At-Large Members who shall be qualified electors of the town. The appointment is for one (1) Wickford Village Business Owner to October 1, 2024.


WICKFORD VILLAGE DESIGN GUIDELINES COMMITTEE: The purpose of this zoning overlay district is to encourage creative solution that will preserve the unique and historic qualities of Wickford village center while helping businesses meet the challenging economy of the 21 st century. The appointment is for one (1) Alternate Business Property Owner to December 31, 2024.


Town Council Rules of Commission, Committee, and Board Appointment procedures and the applications filed for each commission, committee or board vacancy are available for public review in the Town Clerk's Office during normal business hours.
